With the Korea Travels post receiving so much great response, (thank you all 🙏!!) I thought I’d bring some of the attention back to Singapore, my home country! My friend, Kristie, worked around this area previously, and she kept mentioning how Telok Ayer has nice cafes and restaurants (and it really does!!) So I decided to check out the area with her! I’m super determined to go back to Telok Ayer to do some cafehopping!
To my surprise, Telok Ayer is such a mix of past and present. You have shophouses lining the streets, temples even! Yet you see a backdrop of modern buildings and offices. How beautifully contradicting, probably something like Bukchon Hanok Village, where you get to see Seoul’s modern skyline amongst the traditional hanoks. 🏙
Thian Hock Keng Temple stood out in the middle of a business district. There were lanterns hanging outside, probably our scaled down version of Seoul’s Jogyesa Temple? It was so refreshing to see such a colourful sight in a business district. Also, can I say, the flooring was so beautiful! If you walk inside, you’d see a blue building and there’s actually a hidden Peranakan cafe inside! 😲 There were people having lunch inside, and some were even dining under the pavilion! How cool! We felt like tourists in our own country! 📷
I’d totally recommend people to check out Telok Ayer in Singapore, specifically Telok Ayer Street and Amoy Street. If you’re on a budget, you can grab lunch at Amoy Street Food Centre where you can try our famous hawker dishes! If not, check out one of the cafes or restaurants along the street! You can also easily walk to Chinatown, one of Singapore’s must-sees, from Telok Ayer. 🚶 That’s what we did!
How to Go: You can take a train on the Downtown Line, and alight at Telok Ayer MRT Station.
